We’ve two people running to be the President of this country.
One is going around telling his supporters that he has the answers for the War on Terror. In one word, it is preemption. It is a dangerously flawed policy as Iraq has already shown. It does not mean the policy of preemption can’t be right every once in a while. After all, even a stopped clock gives the right time twice in a day. Does not make the clock a good one though.
The Other person seems to have decided that he does not think he needs to answer that question directly. What is his policy, if it’s not preemption? And if it’s not something which can be put in one word, so be it. But he sure as hell needs to spell it out. Maybe he thinks he has already done it. If I can’t seem to cogently describe his policy - and I spend far more time than the average American voter devouring political news, and from every possible communications medium - how can we expect a Joe Schmoe to know anything about that policy by Nov. 2nd?
It’s sad because I know that I don’t like the first guy’s policies. Period. His policy of preemption is wrong and extremely dangerous. However, the second guy does not think that this topic is important enough for him to spend one full speech (let alone a good portion of every speech till Nov. 2nd) on his stand on the War on Terror and the Iraq War. And no I am not just talking about “President Bush is Wrong on blah blah” or “I would have done things differently”. This is the post 9-11 and post Iraq War fiasco world. Why would it be a bad idea for Senator Kerry to declare a “National Security Day”? Spend 90% of his time on it in every stump speech given that day, 5% on the local isues of the place he is in and 5% on questions from “real” people who’ve come to see him. Why wait for the debates? Then follow it up with a “National Economy Day” and so on and so forth. Explicitly invite the Press people over. I understand it can be a politically dangerous move. However, if executed right, it sure will shut everyone, and I mean everyone, up who had any doubts on your positions on the major issues of this Election. Period.
Senator Kerry, please show American voters why they should vote for “Senator Kerry” and not just against President George Bush come Nov. 2nd. Please show them a reason why they should care whose name is mentioned against President George Bush’s name on their ballot come Nov. 2nd.
I think you’re the right person who has the right answers. Help me, better yet, convince me so that in a future blog entry I can rewrite the previous line replacing the word “think” with the word “know”.
