Anecdote of the day

A little anecdote…
…my mom just told me. I had no idea this had happened.
A few years back (96 or 97) my mother was in D.C. for a medical conference. She’s a certified nurse midwife — and was head of midwifery at Brigham & Women’s hospital, at the time.
She ended up taking the little train that runs under the Capitol. At first alone on the train, and then a man stepped on. It was Sen. Kerry. He introduced himself and my mom told him she was one of his constituents (we’re from Boston). She said she was there with her family and to go to a conference. As they rode, she explained that she’d wanted to take my sister to see a session of Congress. He said she’d need tickets (or passes?) and that if she went to his office, he’d arrange for them to get in.
Then he asked her what she did. She said she told him she was a midwife, and was surprised to find, not only that he knew in detail what a midwife was (many don’t), but he was very supportive. They talked for ten minutes or so about health issues and Mom said he was amazingly informed and genuinely interested in what she had to say. She expressly told me “he wasn’t just being political or polite, he really cared”. And when they went to his office, he’d made the arrangements.
Mom’s in AZ this month, working on the Navajo reservation. She tells everyone at the hospital she’s working at this story, and how she’s been a strong supporter of Kerry ever since.
She called me tonight to tell me support on the reservation is also strong; that the little mock-pueblo at the Grand Canyon has a K/E sticker in the window; and that of all the states she drove through to get out west from MA, only TN and TX had a lot of Bush stickers on the highway. She’s convinced that the southwest is Kerry country.
