“Will voters change their mind thanks to Osama’s video?”, that’s the question everyone is asking. The question that really should be asked is:

Assuming that the tape is authentic, why did Osama Bin Laden release the tape 4 days before US Elections? Was it a coincidence? If not, then why?

I can see people falling in two categories:

1. He wanted President Bush to win. By attacking him (and his father) repeatedly, he was counting on Americans to rally behind their leader, despite their differences.

2. He wanted Senator Kerry to win. By showing up and proving to the voters of this country that President Bush had miserably failed in “smoking him out” three years after 9/11.

Indeed, I am pretty sure Americans will be split about this along party lines. However, I am positive that “all” Americans will agree to this: This was no coincidence. Osama Bin Laden timed this. And no matter what his diabolical intentions might have been, one thing is for sure:

He wanted to influence the US voters, the US Presidential Election results, indeed the very fabric of US Democracy!

If you’re a true patriot, a true American, you will not let this happen. You will vote. And you will vote for “your” guy whoever that may be. And if you’re one of those who has not yet made up your mind, Lord only knows what you’re waiting for

Update (10/29/2004 20:05 PST) :

Apparently Ted Koppel in tonight’s Nightline echoed similar sentiments:

“If you like the president, vote for him.”

“If you like John Kerry, vote for him.”

“Don’t let Osama Bin Laden influence your decision.”

Thank you for saying this. I couldn’t agree more. This OBL thing is not left/right, Democratic/Republican. I can’t image OBL cares which candidate wins. His goal is to induce fear. The best way to combat this is to vote. No matter who you choose, voting is the only sensible reaction. In the video, he says that the future is in the hands of the American people. Why do we need a terrorist to remind us of that?
