President Bush’s remarks to Senator Kerry’s speech

John Kerry (news - web sites) on Monday of “new contradictions of his old
positions on Iraq (news - web sites)” and defended the U.S.-led invasion a day
before addressing skeptical world leaders at the United
Nations (news - web sites).

Personal attack of contradictions does not answer the facts laid out in Senator Kerry’s speech. So, nope, that’s just rhetoric.

Bush did not address criticism from his own party, other than generally acknowledging that it is tough in Iraq because insurgents want to see the country fail to emerge as a democracy.

Respectfully Mr. President, why was this eventuality not obvious to you before you invaded Iraq War. What in the world made you and your cronies think that you will be welcomed in Iraq. Oh and the guys fighting in Najaf are NOT insurgents. Muqtada Al Sadr is NOT an insurgent.

Bush seized on a comment by Kerry that the United States had traded a dictator for chaos that has left America less secure. He said that in December, in the heat of his primary battle against anti-war candidate Howard Dean (news - web sites), Kerry had said those who did not believe Saddam’s removal had made the country safer did not have the credibility to be elected.

“Today my opponent continued his pattern of twisting in the wind, with new contradictions of his old positions on Iraq,” Bush said at an “Ask President Bush” event before an enthusiastic crowd in New Hampshire.

I am not sure which is worse. Your denial to accept that things are bleak and continues to become bleaker by every minute or Senator Kerry’s alleged “nuanced” stand. With that said, I would happily trade a stand taken in the heat of a primary campaign than a stubborn stand which continues to cost lives. Frankly, your own nuanced stands (as Senator Kerry pointed out) before the invasion of Iraq pales in comparison to this. Remember your State of the Union speeches where you moved from “Weapons of Mass Destruction” to “Weapons of Mass Destruction related program activities”!

“We must show resolve and determination. Mixed signals are the wrong signals to send to the enemy, mixed signals are the wrong signals to send to the people of Iraq. Mixed signals are the wrong signals to send to our allies. And mixed signals are the wrong signals to send to our troops in combat,” he said.

Resolve and determination to do what? Keep ignoring our mistakes. What Mixed signals? Let me spell it out for you again (from Senator Kerry’s speech):

• Your Administration’s War on Terror took a wrong turn the day you decided to hastily invade Iraq. That Saddam Husain’s Iraq and War on Terror were two parallel problems and could be dealt with differently (kinda like the way you’re dealing with North Korea) is obvious to one and all (except your die-hard supporters)
• Your Administration was wrong about the imminent nature of Iraq’s threats and was complicit in playing up the threat
• Your Administration was wrong about Iraq’s 9/11 connections and continues to use political chicanery and deft use of words to keep this notion alive
• Your Administration is wrong when it over-promises for political gains only to under-perform later and then point the fingers at insurgents!!
• Your Administration was wrong to give tax cuts at a time when the nation was getting ready for a worldwide war against terrorism, something it had never done before.

The “mixed signals”, “nuance”, “flip-flop” words can only take you so far Mr. President. It’s time you started to own up to your mistakes.

Iraq War should never have been fought as part of the War on Terror. Now, YOU and YOUR POLICIES have made Iraq the most violent and dangerous place in the world. Period.
