DEBORAH NORVILLE (8/26/04): You talked about Christmas in Cambodia in 1968. That seems to be the one question mark that continues to be there and that’s dogging Senator Kerry. He has said that he was on the Cambodian border on Christmas of 1968. He also said that President Nixon was president at that time; Lyndon Johnson would have been at the time. Were you’all anywhere close to Cambodia?
So, 69 days before this Presidential Elections, this continues to be the talk of the town. I wonder what does a soldier in Najaf or Fallujah think about all this. I wonder what the 3000-odd victims of 9/11 and their families think about all this. I wonder what the whole world thinks of all this.
This is it. This is what ails United States and its citizens today. If we could just “solve” this mystery of whether “Kerry is lying about Cambodia or not”, we would have solved the problems facing our soldiers in Iraq, we would have solved the problems that we face from a sluggish economy, we would have solved the problems that we face from a “faceless” enemy.
I am not picking on Deborah necessarily. These symptoms are shown by anchors across the board - television or radio. Partisan back-and-forth, name calling, he-said-she-said, my wounds were deeper than yours, I stayed 2 days longer in Vietnam than you, I was on the border of Cambodia and not in it, he was not in Cambodia in 1968, he is a flip flopper, he is a steady leader, he went AWOL, he did not finish his Air National Guard duty, etc. etc. That’s it. Let’s discuss these. Lord knows that once we get to the bottom of these, we would have “all” our questions answered. All our miseries healed.
