So, what’s cool about Columbus, Ohio?

My brother, who finished his MBA from San Francisco State University this summer, took off this morning for Columbus OH to pursue a consulting opportunity in Advanced Flash development.
We stayed together for almost five years in our little apartment here in Santa Clara. So, it’s been somewhat bitter sweet seeing him leave. Ofcourse, I am happy for him and wish him the very best.
I wonder what kind of a place Columbus is, especially for an IT professional attempting to settle down and raise his family.

Having grown up in Columbus (I live in Philly now), I can say that the Midwest in general and the Ohio capital in particular is a great place to raise a family. The most obvious reason is low cost of living compared to the coasts. Unlike a lot of Rust Belt cities (Cleveland, Pittsburgh), Columbus is a relatively young city that’s actually growing. It benefits from being a service-sector city (government, banks, insurance) and home to Ohio State, the biggest campus in the country. So in general there are a lot of IT opportunities. And it has most of the cultural/entertainment ammentiies today’s urban dwellers look for.
It’s definitely cleaner, friendlier, cheaper, and more spacious than the East Coast. That said, I don’t know much about CA and everyone I know who’s lived in San Fran said it’s just about the best place on earth.

I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and currently still reside here. I think it’s a great place live.
