WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - Merriam-Webster says the most searched word on its Web sites in 2004 was “blog.” The dictionary publisher defines the word as, “a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer.”
This is the first award of the year for “blog.” The publisher, John Morse, said there were also voluminous hits for “incumbent”, “electoral” and “partisan,” spurred by news events and the presidential campaign.
“By tracking the words people are looking up on Merriam-Webster Online, we are developing a better idea of what people want from reference sources … (which) can help lead our editorial staff to make adjustments in revisions of print dictionaries,” Morse said.
Steve Rubel, publisher of MicroPersuasion.com, has launched an e-mail effort to have Time magazine name bloggers as its “People of the Year.”
Nice and certainly well-deserved. It’s nice to know that we (myself and my dad) played our small part in making this happen
