Hehehheh! Very funny! BTW, back in MBA school (SF State) one of my profs did say that “Apache” actually got its name because it was a “patched up piece of software”! Is that true? Frankly, I didn’t beleive the story. Maybe it was true after all!

Ok, so I looked up Apache site (the current version) and did not find anything. But, thanks to the WayBackMachine, I was able to pull up their 1996 version of the site which says (and I quote):

Why is it called Apache ?
The Apache group was formed around a number of people who provided patch files that had been written for NCSA httpd 1.3. The result after combining them was A PAtCHy server.

Thanks a lot for the confirmation! Kinda feel guilty for not believing my Prof. Well, at least I got the real story. Honestly, I feel a bit disappointed. I always felt the “Apache” name had some American Indian story behind it. Something to do with some great Indian warrior…or some other heroic story. The real story is so…so disappointing! Anyway…and thanks for the link to the WayBackMachine site. Cool site.
