Peter Jennings dies of lung cancer
Can’t say I saw him much as anchor of ABC WorldNews Tonight. Except occasionally while Channel surfing. However, during this past US Presidential election, I had a chance to hear him on a few occasions. The one that stands out was at a forum titled “Presidential Elections and Network News” along with his peers Tom Brokaw (former anchor of NBC News) and Dan Rather (former anchor CBS News). I saw it on C-SPAN (Video Archive). To make a long story short, I came out of that feeling a greater sense of respect for Mr. Jennings. I guess I liked his candor, his approach of being forthright. Reminded me of someone I know.
So, this Spring when he announced that he was diagnosed with lung cancer (he was a chain smoker and he openly admitted it), I felt really sad. Somewhere inside me, I fervently hoped he would win this battle. Little did I know that he really had NO TIME left.
God, I hate cigarettes! I really really really do.
