It’s been exactly…

…10 years of my stay in US!

August 3rd 1995! Yup. That’s when I first came to US. Landed at Dallas Airport in Texas on my way to Tempe, Arizona. I had come to pursue my Masters in Industrial Engineering at Arizona State. Thanks to the 5000-odd dollars that my parents had saved up for me, I knew I was covered for the first semester of school. I also knew I had my elder brother and sister-in-law to fall back on in case things messed up. Thanks to their love and support, my parents’ blessings and the wonderful folks at Memorial Union, Student Computer Lab at College of Ed, Instruction Support Lab and ASPIN (places where I worked while pursuing what later turned into my “dual” Masters @ ASU), I did just fine. Heck, now that I look back, it was g-r-e-a-t! I graduated in Fall of 1998 and have had good fortune of working in companies like Lucent Technologies, Avaya Systems and now Cisco Systems. Jeez…10 years. In Internet years, it almost feels like 100 years! Heck, I feel old.

So, what has changed. At a personal level, not much. Really. Other than the fact that I am a lot more balder, a lot more fatter and an uncle to three wonderful kids, things really have not changed much. As to whatever happened to my plans of doing Masters in Industrial Engineering, you ask? Well, let’s just say I completed the formalities of completing courses like “Operations Research”, “Simulation using SLAM II” and a few more the names of which I conveniently choose to forget.

Oh, and one more thing. In these years, I picked up a thing or two about this “thing” called the Internet. Can’t say I knew anything about it when I first boarded the British Airways flight to US. And boy am I thankful for this wonderful opportunity. So, to everyone who made this last ten years truly a dream come true, allow me to say: T-H-A-N-K Y-O-U!

Excellent! Bet it gave you a much open perspective on the world and a gentle reminder that the world is not just India - like I thought :) It will be exactly 7 years for me on December 3, 2005! It has been an enriching experience to say the least. While I do treasure my 26 years in India, mostly those from West bengal - Hartleys and Kharagpur(not much of my years in Chennai were that exciting), my experiences in the US and its openness to all cultures is what defines me now. More and more I feel that we are all basically just citizens of the world.
